day 16: cajarc to limogne-en-quercy

The thing about going down to some of these villages, is that it usually means kicking off the next day going back up. Fortunately the ascent was not as bad as AllTrails’ elevation chart made it look. Or my legs have gotten a lot stronger since I left Conques four days ago. Either way, this ended up being a relatively easy day – which was a huge relief after the previous day!

Segment 14 continues through the Causses du Quercy regional park to the causse of Limogne. But first, I did get to walk through the old town of Cajarc.

The trail follows the river for a short bit, before starting up the cliffs. Very pretty setting for fishing and boating.

I passed the remains of what looks like might have been a suspension bridge over the Lot, but I can’t find any information on it. Based on the growth of the trees beneath, it’s been out of service for a long time.

Then it was back up to the dry plateau. The terrain was much the same as the day before, but coming into Limogne-en-Quercy there was an interesting circuit des cabanes, a 3.7 km loop around 28 of the dry stone huts in various stages of restoration.

Usually I check my itinerary in the morning before I head out, and set the address of the night’s accommodations in Google Maps so I can find it even if I have no connectivity when I get to town (which has happened a couple times).

This day, however, I did not. I arrived in Limogne-en-Quercy around 1 pm, ate the sandwich I’d picked up from a bakery before leaving Cajarc, and then looked up the address – and discovered that it was a B&B in Mas de Games… which was 3 km behind me on the trail.

So back I trudged (reassuring the amused hikers I passed that I wasn’t going the wrong way) and checked in… to realize that this was one of the rare places where dinner wasn’t included. There was no way I was walking to Limogne and back again to get food, so I ate a Kind bar for dinner.
